5 Causes of Dull Skin and How to Fix It

Skin Looks Dull

Everyone wants healthy, youthful skin. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and moisture more rapidly. This leads to duller looking skin over time.

If you find yourself struggling with dull appearing skin consider a skin detox and/or try these tips for healthy, glowing skin.

1. Dehydration

We know that we’re 75% water, and that includes your skin. If your skin feels dull and lifeless, it might just be drying out. Dry skin can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. You can even cause sagging skin and scales! Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Limit your caffeine intake, since it’s a diuretic, and can dry you out even faster. And remember to moisturize regularly, and exfoliate, to get those dry skin flakes off your face in a hurry!

2. Stress

Stress plays a huge role in the elasticity, and hydration of your skin. The stress hormone cortisol can affect blood flow to the skin, and skin repair, causing your skin to dry out faster, and lose elasticity at a higher rate.

So if you’re feeling stressed, try some meditation, or even just take a break and see the sunshine for a bit. Your skin will thank you!

3. You’re Tired

Along with stress, there’s a lack of sleep to consider. Sleep is important for restoring both cognitive function and cellular regeneration in the body. That means it’s a time for your skin to repair itself, and your body’s cells to flush out any toxins. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, there’s a good chance your body isn’t getting the restoration time it needs. If your sleep cycle has been affected by your workload or other stresses, there’s also a good chance that you’re not getting enough of the vitamin D we naturally soak up from the sun.

Slather on some sunscreen to keep your skin protected, spend a good long day outdoors, and get a decent night’s sleep, to help freshen up your skin!

4. Your Diet

When it comes to the way diet impacts your appearance, it’s not all about the waistline. Eating too much salty or processed foods can enhance fluid retention, which can give you a puffy look and sometimes dry out your skin. Excessive refined sugar also loads you up on unhealthy fats, while keeping the healthier fats and proteins that promote younger looking skin from doing their work.

Stick to a diet with lots of antioxidants, lean proteins and healthy fats like avocados, fish and eggs, to keep your skin looking young.

5. Your Makeup Regime

Even when you’re removing your makeup every night, you could be damaging your skin. Matte cosmetics can dry out the natural oils of your skin, smothering your skin and making it look duller and more washed out. If your makeup remover is high in alcohol, you could also be drying out your skin without noticing.

Switch to BB creams and foundations with light-reflecting pigments that will help your skin look more even-toned. Use a cream highlighter instead of matte colors, to allow you skin space to breath. And use a balm makeup cleanser that will add moisture to your skin as it removes the makeup.

Everyone wants beautiful, glowing skin. But without even realizing it, unhealthy habits may be compromising the health and the look of your skin. Try our tips to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, and chase away that dull look for good!
