Your Guide to Applying Sunscreen Like a Pro

proper sunscreen application

Having to apply and reapply sunscreen when you're supposed to be having fun can be pretty inconvenient. We promise you, however, getting melanoma or even just a sunburn is much, much worse! Plus, there are plenty of ways to make proper sunscreen application more effective and easier.

There are a few important variables to check before learning proper sunscreen application. The first thing you want to decide on is whether you want a chemical or physical sunscreen. We recommend a physical sunscreen as there are many risks involved with using a chemical-based sunscreen. Whichever you decide, be sure it is broad spectrum. This refers to sunscreens that protects from UVA rays, which cause fine lines and premature aging, as well as, UVB rays, which cause sunburn.

Forms of Sunscreen

This may be surprising but there are actually several forms that sunscreen can be applied. This includes:

  • Traditional sunscreen
  • Sunscreen mist
  • Sunscreen powder
  • Sunscreen in cosmetics

Since traditional sunscreen is slightly more cumbersome for those last minute outings, SPF mist is an effective and convenient alternative! It's also the best method to reapply sunscreen. Sunscreen powders and SPF in makeup serve as a great supplement to your primary sunscreen, however, they are not enough on their own.

Tips for Applying Traditional Sunblock:

  • More actually is better! Especially on the face and top of your head, you want to get a generous coating of sunscreen, so feel free to use a minimum of a tablespoon sized dollop of sunscreen on your face alone.
  • Best under makeup! In fact, putting sunscreen on before makeup gives your sunscreen time to soak into your skin. Additionally, you can consider it as a moisturizer and/or primer all in one! Wearing it over makeup can have it's challenges and prove to be quite messy.
  • Treat your sunscreen application like a day at the spa: massage parts of your face, arms, and legs thoroughly with your hands to make sure that the sunscreen is everywhere it needs to be.
  • Rub in area of initial application well to prevent any white cast or spots.
  • Don't forget the areas just under the line of your clothes at the collar, sleeves, and bottom of shorts to help with tan line issues. The hairline and around the ears are also frequently-missed areas of the face, so be sure to double check these features.

Tips for Applying Sunscreen Mist:

  • Shake the bottle vigorously to make sure the ingredients blend well before spraying.
  • Hold the spray bottle close enough to hit your skin, but far enough to get a sheer application while keeping any droplets from getting into your eyes and mouth (especially when spraying around areas like the front of your neck and chest)!
  • Don't forget to reapply every two or three hours!
  • If you're planning to swim, you still need to apply a traditional sunscreen that is water-resistant.

Now that you're confident that your sunscreen game is on point, let the fun begin!
