We know what you’re thinking, why do you call it “sunspring protection?” Well, first off, we like making up words (i.e. “funscreen”), and secondly, to emphasize the importance of sunscreen in the spring!
What many people seem to miss about UV radiation is that it’s invisible, it cannot be seen or felt! For this reason, it’s foolish to base your use of sunscreen on factors like temperature or even brightness. When you take this into account, it makes a lot more sense why it’s so dangerous and why so many people still get it so wrong!
This is why we are consistently reminding others that UV rays can still damage your skin even on cooler days. Spring is the peak time when you're at risk for getting a sunburn as UV rays become increasingly intense. This is due to the sun reaching a more direct angle, according to the FDA. As the summer solstice draws nearer, that angle becomes more and more direct, making late spring and early summer the most dangerous.
Don’t wait though, those damaging rays are already at work! Remember that sun damage is cumulative so even regular exposure can increase your skin cancer risk. Additionally, it’s extremely important to be in the habit of using and reapplying sunscreen every two hours.
Spring is an exciting time of year, especially this year as the world starts returning to some sense of normality. A picnic, beach day, or walk in the park never sounded better (spring bucket list, anyone?)! We encourage you not only to wear and reapply sunscreen often but also to implement other sun safety practices such as:
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat
- Cover up as much as possible, whenever possible with tightly knit and darker colored clothing
- Carry an umbrella to provide shade when in direct sunlight
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Add UV protecting film to your home and/or car windows
- Stay in the shade whenever possible
