With summer almost here, you’re most likely going to spend a lot of time outside in the sun as you go on vacation with family, hang out at the pool with friends and enjoy the great outdoors thanks to the warmer temperatures. Because you’re going to be outside more, it’s important to keep your skin safe from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which can cause damage and skin aging. Sunburn, hyperpigmentation, sun spots and even skin cancer can happen when you don’t safely protect your skin, so follow these critical sunscreen tips for saving your skin this summer!
• Reapply Sunscreen Every 2 Hours
When using sunscreen it’s critical that you follow the direction on the package for maximum protection. The majority of "experts" recommend that you reapply it on your skin every 2 hours to ensure continuous sun protection.
• Using Water-Resistant Sunscreen
If you plan on heading to the beach or swimming at the pool, make sure that you use a water-resistant sunscreen that won’t come off when you’re having some water fun. The sun’s rays actually reflect off the water’s surface, thus being even more harmful, which is why you need to make sure that you’re especially covered and protected while in the water. Also, note, that water resistant doesn’t mean waterproof, which is why you need to make sure to always reapply after swimming.
• Use An SPF 25 Or Higher
There are a quite a number of different SPF levels on the market today, but the safest and most beneficial is SPF 25 or higher. In fact, always opt for the higher when possible for optimum sunscreen protection, especially if you’re going to be outside for a prolonged period of time. Also, the best practice is to layer sunscreens. If you use a moisturizer that already has a 15+ SPF in it and then layer ZINC IT OVER® Sunscreen Facial Mist on bare skin or over your makeup, you’ll get an SPF of at least 40!
• Choose A Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
Besides a high SPF, you’ll also want to make sure that you use a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection since it means it will protect against the both UVB and UVA rays. All sunscreen products aim to protect against UVB rays that cause sunburn, but it’s UVA rays that can contribute to premature aging and skin cancer.
• Use A Mineral-Based Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens contain harmful ingredients that can do more harm than good. When these sunscreens are absorbed by your skin (and even your bloodstream), these toxic ingredients can be a threat to your internal health. Some mineral-based sunscreens also have synthetic chemicals so be sure to read labels. Many companies claim to be "organic" or "safe" but their ingredient lists tell a different story. ZINC IT OVER® uses Zinc Oxide, which is widely known to be the best and most healthy sun protection ingredient available, with No Yucky Chemicals!
• Always Wear Sunscreen
Even if you’re not going to be outside for prolonged periods of time, you should still always use sunscreen no matter what, especially on your face. The sun's rays can hit you when you're driving in the car or sitting next to a window.
