How to Effectively Prevent and Treat Under Eye Bags and Dark Circles

In both men and women, dark circles under the eyes are a common concern. Dark circles can make you look older than you are, especially if they're accompanied by bags. Adding insult to injury, they can be tough to remove. There are many culprits that can contribute to dark circles. Lack of sleep and genetics, however, are most often the cause.

As you become older, you're more likely to develop bags, swelling, or puffiness around your eyes. The tissue around your eyes deteriorate as you become older. This is true for some of the muscles that support your eyelids, as well.  Your eyelids might appear swollen when the normal fat that supports them moves into the lower ones. It can also cause your eyes and lower face to expand as a result of this fluid accumulation. Most of the time, thankfully, there is no need to seek medical attention. You can easily take steps to prevent and treat these conditions at home.

Reasons for under-eye bags or dark circles

Regardless of how epic your skin care routine is or healthy habits you practice, veins are inevitably! They will eventually appear through the thin skin covering and around your eyes as time goes on. Here are a few causes of dark circles:

Age

This is another typical cause of dark circles under one's eyes. Skin becomes thinner as we age. Also, you lose the fat and collagen that are necessary to keep your skin supple. You'll notice a darkening of the area beneath your eyes as a result of this process.

Exposure to sun

Sun exposure can lead to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its color if you're exposed to too much of it. The skin around your eyes might darken if you spend a significant amount of time in the sun. Applying and reapplying sunscreen can help ward of this type of sun damage.

Dehydration

Dark circles around the eyes can often be traced back to dehydration. When you don't get enough water in your body, the skin around your eyes becomes lifeless and sunkened. Because of their proximity to the underlying bone, this is a prominent cause of under eye bags and circles. Skin can easily become dehydrated, especially in the cold weather months.

Tip: Try keeping a hydrating facial mist on you to make misting your skin easy and convenient rather than a task!

Extreme tiredness

You can get black circles under your eyes if you oversleep, are extremely tired, or merely stay up a few hours past your typical bedtime. As a result of sleep deprivation, your skin will appear dull and pale, allowing dark tissue and veins to shine through.

Genetics

When it comes to developing dark circles beneath your eyes, your genes can play a role. It can be passed on from generation to generation, and it can either get worse or fade away with time. Dark circles under the eyes can also be caused by a predisposition to various medical diseases, such as thyroid illness.

Treatment options for dark circles and under-eye bags

The look of under eye circles may be reduced by using easy home remedies. These cures may be worth a try, even though some of them have not been scientifically proven. They are however, affordable and have no side effects.

Cold compresses

Apply a cold compress for about 10 minutes in the morning or evening. Better yet, in the morning and the evening. This approach causes the blood vessels to constrict resulting in less noticeable dark circles. Simply keep a mask or cold compress in the fridge and use it twice daily.

Use cucumbers

Fun (and useful) fact, cucumbers have skin-lightening characteristics. Therefore, you can use cucumber slices to treat raccoon eyes without the use of any harsh chemicals! After 30 minutes of chilling in the refrigerator, chop up a fresh cucumber into thick slices.

Ten minutes after applying them, remove the slices from your eyes. After using, rinse your eye region with warm water, but not hot. Soothing the eyes with cucumber slices may help minimize puffiness. Cucumber's vitamin C content can nourish and hydrate skin, as well.

Enough sleep

Dark circles can easily be reduced by getting enough sleep. When you don't get enough sleep, your skin will appear pale, making your dark circles even more noticeable. To avoid dark circles, get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. They don't call it beauty sleep for nothing!

Medical treatments

Some medical procedures are available to minimize the look of dark circles for a long-term solution. There are several common approaches, such as:

  • Decrease pigmentation using chemical peels
  • Resurfacing and tightening of the skin via laser surgery
  • Tissue fillers and medical tattoos can be used to fill up thinning skin regions and cover-up blood vessels and pigmentation beneath the eyes.
  • Surgery to remove extra fat and skin to reveal a flat, even area for surgical implants

Under eye dark circles and bags is nothing to feel ashamed of. This is a common problem we all have delt with at some point or another. The good news is, it's usually an easily preventable issue with a good nights sleep, keeping the body hydrated, and sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!   • Most of your info has to do with dark circles under the eyes – I don’t have that problem. Instead I have bags under my eyes but no dark circles. If you find something that can help with my issue, please advise.
